Proposed legislation for parking in Balboa Park

The city of San Diego is making the decision to charge for parking in Balboa Park. They intend to put parking meters on all the streets in Balboa Park and charge $2.50 per hour.

All parking lots (with the exception of the Zoo’s parking lot) are classified in one of three tiers:

For now the Zoo parking lot will be free but the city of San Diego is negotiating with the Zoo’s management to charge in that lot also. The city wants to start collecting revenue in October 2025.

Went to the Balboa Park Advisory Committee meeting Sept 15th. There were so many visitors they had to move the meeting from the Santa Fe room to the dance floor. Estimate that there were about 80-100 people there. About 50 were allowed to speak for one minute. Spoke for one minute and compared this plan to Covid-19 in terms of how it could affect our clubs. Every person who spoke was against the parking plan! One of the Balboa Park Club members announced that the councilman who represents Balboa Park would not vote for the parking plan in its current form. They also read some e-mails from citizens who were all against the plan. At the end of the meeting the Balboa Park Committee unanimously voted agains the plan.

Channel 8 and channel 5 were there, so you may see a story about the meeting on the news tonight. We need to keep up the pressure on the city council if we are going to defeat this plan. Please help us spread the word.

One of our dancers, Chad has put a great deal of time and energy into gathering this info and confirming it. The paperwork attached is to explain the proposed Ordinance and some of the things we'd like to try and do to prevent it.
